The pigs are female Danish Landrace breed with weights ranging from 50-100 kg to imitate an average human person. This makes it possible to apply the standard tools, equipment, surgery techniques and treatment protocols as in a clinical setting on humans. Pigs are generally considered a good experimental model for translational research, as they share similar anatomy and physiology to humans. Accordingly, data attained from our animal models is translatable to humans. All studies are carried out in accordance with existing ethical laws.
In addition to our porcine model, we also have an infection model in collaboration with the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at Copenhagen University. In the infection model an inoculum of a certain strain of S. aureus is introduced into a drillhole in the porcine tibia. 5 days after the inoculation a manifest osteomyelitis discriminative to human osteomyelitis is obtained. This allows for microdialysis sampling in infected bone and subcutaneous tissue, which is of great clinical relevance.
