PhD-couse Aarhus University: Bacterial bone and implant infections 

Course leader: Mats Bue

Scheduled: Every second year (last event 2022)

Aim: Presentation of state-of-the-art knowledge regarding bacterial bone and implant infection. Introduction of reaserch and challenges regarding turning basic research into clinical application. 

Learning objectives: 

  • Be able to describe the etiology behind bone and implant infections. 
  • Be able to explain, why bone and implant infections are difficult to treat. 
  • Be able able to identify relevant pre-clinical models. 
  • Be able to describe basic pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic models of antibacterial treatment. 
  • Attain knoweledge about the latest microbiological and histopatological analysis. 
  • Be able to plan and present potentiel future studies regarding bone and implant infections. 

Specialty specific course in orthopedic surgery (A-course): Infection and amputation surgery

Teacher: Mats Bue (amongst others)

Time: Annually 

Despriction: Two day physical attendance as well as participation on online platform containing videos, documents and references for future clinical and scientific development. The attandee will work with surgical techniques relavant to infection surgery. Specific infections within the musculoskeletal system is discussed. Presentation of the dysvascular patient and tips and tricks for amputation surgery. 

Learning objectives: 

  • Be able to distingush between acute and chronic infections. 
  • Know the basic principles about treatment of osteomyelitis with and without implant. 
  • Know the treatment of gangrene - etc. amputation. 

Symposium at Danish Orthopedic Society's annual meeting

Time: November 2022

Titel: Prosthesis infection, fracture-related infection and other bone infections. Targeted diagnostic improves treatment options. Best practice within diagnostic of bone infections. 

Description: Three experts within diagnostics of orthopedic infections were invited to present their perspectivs, here amongst traumatologist, Mario Morgenstern, from Basel, Switzerland. 

Latest practices and state-of-the-art evidence on the following topics were presented: 

  • Improvement of the microbiological diagnostic and targeting of the antibacterial treatment. 
  • Improvement of the diagnostic of culture negative infections with the use of histopathological examinations. 
  • Understanding of possibilities and pit-falls within imaging and perclinic.
